The leading development themes of the Joensuu ecosystem agreement ( focus on new business related to bioeconomy and circular economy and photonics.

The Joensuu region's strong expertise and development potential in bioeconomy focuses on forest bioeconomy, in particular. The bioeconomy and circular economy sector has more than 260 organisations and 5,000 experts in the region. The vision is to be the world's most unique hub for bioeconomy and circular economy expertise and business in 2027.

The Photonics Finland Network ( is coordinated from Joensuu, and the Institute of Photonics operates in the city. The university has a flagship programme in photonics funded by the Academy of Finland. There is also a laboratory at Karelia University of Applied Sciences that meets the specific requirements for photonics.
